The Highbridge trails got spanked right on Sunday, with eleven people volunteering an unprecedented 40 hours of labor. All of the back trails were raked, and vigorous poison Ivy cut back, and the DJ’s got a face-lift with a spankin’ new roll-in and a base for the first jump in the new beginner line!
New York City, February 2010. With the latest wave of snow hitting NYC just days ago, mountain bikers and roadies alike are forced to keep their bikes on lockdown as they watch their favorite trail system or road route hibernate into winter mode. If the snow isn’t enough to keep most people off their bikes, the cold temperatures should do the trick. Freezing hands, cold feet and miserable conditions are just a few good reasons to call off the afternoon ride and hang out indoors.
Since the opening of the Highbridge trails in May 2007, we’ve had a few major projects on the “to-do” list that we’ve meant to tackle but just hadn’t found the time or the manpower to accomplish. One of those was building up the switchback on Rough Rider to make the steep rock climb more, well, climbable. The previous iteration of the switchback dipped down and required riders to climb a longer steep pitch, but our plan was to raise the level of the switchback by 3 feet so and lessen …
Sunday was a scorcher at Stewart Forest in Newburgh, NY as 90+ degree temps, a bajillion percent humidity and nearly 400 racers collided in the near-perfect storm of sweat, triumph, heartbreak and beer known locally as the Darkhorse 40. Far from “just another mountain bike race,” the DH40 is everything that a great regional mountain bike race should be- not too serious, with a great course, good competition, serious challenge and copius amounts of liquid carbohydrate refreshment.

The weather gods apparently love the USA, and 5 straight weeks of non-stop rain, chose to shine down on us this past weekend providing incredibly conditions for the first dry race of the Hudson to Highlands XC race series- the Lewis Morris Challenge- this past Sunday at Lewis Morris Park in Morristown, NJ.
